Need Distance - High Handicapper
If you are a golfer seeking the highest velocity golf ball to provide the longest, straightest distance possible or the feeling of durability with your golf ball, you should choose a distance ball. These balls are generally reserved for high handicap, slow swing speeds or beginner to intermediate golfers or for golfers just seeking explosive distance and less side spin. Distance balls, in most cases, are two-piece balls with Polymer/Surlyn covers that are generally cut-proof.
Two Piece Distance
Positive: They spin less, and that means less slice and hook. They also may launch higher because the firm Polymer/Surlyn cover tends to slide up the clubface slightly at impact. Harder covers are less likely to show damage from abrasion, too.
Negative: They spin less. That's a problem around the greens, but it also could prevent slower swingers from generating enough carry. As for feel, generally, it's going to be more cricket ball than feather pillow.
Perfect For:
• Beginner golfers
• Slicers and hookers
• Generally are not as expensive
Need More Spin – Mid Handicapper
Two Piece Low Compression
If you are looking for soft feel and mid spin for long, straight distance from tee-to-green a control ball is recommended. Control balls are a little harder to control as they are designed to react to your swing speed with a firm response on full shots and a soft response off scoring clubs therefore control balls are usually left for intermediate to advanced golfers. Control balls commonly are two / three-piece balls with a durable Surlyn cover.
Positive: Because they're easier to compress, low-compression balls can improve distance for moderate swing speeds. Some balls in this category offer low spin to improve accuracy and softer covers to improve feel.
Negative: Soft feel may not translate into more spin on short greenside shots
Perfect For:
• Golfers seeking more of a soft feel
• Consistent golfers (i.e. Periodic slicing or hooking)
• Golfers who have little or no problem with distance
Need Control – Low Handicapper
If you are a low handicap golfer, you are probably looking for a golf ball that is designed for a wide range of launch conditions with tour-level performance and technology. If you fit are a serious golfer you fit into this category you will need a balata or Elastomer ball. These balls are tour proven, and offer shot-grabbing control with unsurpassed control and feel. These balls are the most expensive and cut the easiest.
They are generally multi-layer balls. The multi-layer design consists of a modified wound core and soft balata or Elastomer cover. The core and cover are separated by several ultra-thin layers made of a range of materials. This technology offers exceptionally control around the green and helps to promote high spin rates off wedges and short irons for maximum stopping power, while offering a soft feel and great distance off the tee.
Multilayer Construction
Positive: Each layer enhances a performance aspect. The soft cover enhances feel, the firm inner mantle improves energy transfer to the core and the core itself promotes distance. Urethane-covered multilayer balls are softer than two-piece balls and can spin more on chip shots and bunker shots. Urethane is just as soft as balata but is more durable and consistent.
Perfect For:
• Controlling and manipulating the spin on the ball (perfect for back spin)
• Maximum feel and least durable
• Golfers who never slice or hook the ball
Negative: Not all multilayer balls have urethane covers or even the same type of urethane cover, and some are designed for tour-level swing speeds (105-120 mph). Furthermore, urethane actually slows the ball's spin rate slightly, decreasing its distance potential for slower swingers
